No, your employer is not required to pay you while you are on sick leave. In Ontario, employees are entitled to three (3) full days of unpaid sick leave every calendar year under the Employment Standards Act. However, an employer may be required to pay an employee on sick leave where the terms of the employment agreement provide for paid sick leave. Employees can apply for Employment Insurance sickness benefits, or for more prolonged illnesses, short-term and long-term disability benefits (which may be a part of an employee’s benefits package).
